What is Sports Physical Therapy?

Sports physical therapy is a specialized area of rehabilitation focused on the prevention, evaluation, treatment, and recovery of injuries related to athletic activity. Unlike general PT, sports rehab targets the higher physical demands athletes place on their bodies and aims to restore peak performance, not just basic function.

At New Jersey Rehab Experts, our sports PT programs are built around sport-specific rehabilitation protocols that address the unique biomechanics, movement patterns, and intensity levels required by your sport.

  • Competitive and recreational athletes of all ages
  • Post-surgical athletes (ACL, meniscus, labrum, rotator cuff)
  • Weekend warriors dealing with overuse injuries
  • High school and college athletes needing return-to-play clearance
  • Active individuals looking to prevent injuries and improve performance

Injuries We Treat

Comprehensive Sports Injury Care

From acute sprains to complex post-surgical recovery, we treat sports injuries across every body region.

Our Approach

Sport-Specific Treatment Techniques

Advanced, evidence-based methods designed to accelerate recovery and maximize athletic performance.

Sport-Specific Training

Progressive drills and exercises that mimic the movements, intensity, and demands of your specific sport for a safe return to play.

Manual Therapy

Hands-on joint mobilization, soft tissue mobilization, and myofascial release to restore range of motion and reduce pain.

Dry Needling

Trigger point dry needling for rapid muscle tension release, pain reduction, and accelerated recovery between training sessions.

Performance Analysis

Biomechanical assessment, gait analysis, and movement screening to identify weaknesses and optimize athletic mechanics.

Blood Flow Restriction

BFR training to build strength and muscle size using lighter loads, ideal for early-stage rehabilitation when heavy loading is not yet safe.

Return-to-Play Testing

Objective, criteria-based testing including hop tests, strength symmetry, and functional movement screens before sport clearance.

Why Sports PT

The Benefits of Sports Physical Therapy

Reduce Re-Injury Risk

Structured return-to-sport protocols significantly lower re-injury rates compared to time-based return decisions alone.

Return Stronger Than Before

Sport-specific rehab goes beyond restoring baseline function to optimize strength, agility, and movement quality.

Faster, Safer Recovery

Evidence-based protocols combined with advanced modalities help athletes return to competition weeks earlier than traditional rehab.

Prevent Future Injuries

Movement screening and corrective exercise programs identify and address biomechanical weaknesses before they become injuries.

What to Expect

Your path from injury to full return-to-sport performance

1

Sports-Focused Evaluation (60 to 90 min)

Your therapist conducts a comprehensive assessment including injury history, sport demands analysis, movement screening, strength and flexibility testing, and establishes measurable return-to-sport criteria.

2

Acute Phase: Pain and Swelling Control

Early treatment focuses on reducing pain and inflammation using manual therapy, modalities, and protected movement. You receive a home program tailored to your injury stage.

3

Strengthening and Sport-Specific Training

Progressive loading, agility drills, plyometrics, and sport-specific movements rebuild strength, power, and confidence. Sessions typically occur two to three times per week.

4

Return-to-Play Testing and Clearance

Objective criteria-based testing (hop tests, strength symmetry, functional screens) determines when you are physically and psychologically ready to return to full competition.

What to Bring and Wear

Bring to Your Appointment:

  • Insurance card and photo ID
  • MRI or imaging reports (if available)
  • Surgical notes (if post-operative)
  • Sport-specific footwear (cleats, running shoes)
  • Any braces or supports you currently use

What to Wear:

Wear athletic clothing that allows full range of motion, such as shorts, athletic pants, and a t-shirt. Bring your sport-specific shoes if applicable. Later sessions may involve running, jumping, and agility work, so dress ready to move. Arrive 15 minutes early for intake paperwork.
